After all, you have to locate and enroll in a program that will furnish the proper training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician. But just how do you approach evaluating and contrasting schools so that you can make the ideal selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their residences. After they have identified some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are important concerns when comparing vet technician programs, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the vet technician schools you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various responsibilities of veterinary technicians and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Vet Tech

Eufaula AL vet technician holding dogAmong the first decisions that you will have to make is whether you want to train as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What technicians and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many tasks that they can carry out within the Eufaula AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared to assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Eufaula AL labs or research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Technician Programs Offered

Eufaula AL student attending online vet tech programAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Eufaula AL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Eufaula AL vet tech schoolsAt this point you should have decided on which veterinary credential that you want to earn, and if you want to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in the Eufaula AL area as well as across the United States, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the veterinary technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the vet tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Eufaula AL area veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final tip, phone some Eufaula AL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a medical setting. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with Eufaula AL veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate could signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the college has an outstanding reputation within the Eufaula AL vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Eufaula AL schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from your Eufaula AL home, you must confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the college is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the vet programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Eufaula AL. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are available before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies. You might find that an online school is the best way to fit your vet training into your hectic life.

    Eufaula, Alabama

The site along the Chattahoochee River that is now modern-day Eufaula was occupied by three Creek tribes, including the Eufaulas.[4]:3 By the 1820s the land was part of the Creek Indian Territory and supposedly off-limits to white settlement.[4]:4 By 1827 enough illegal white settlement had occurred that the Creeks appealed to the federal government for protection of their property rights. In July of that year, federal troops were sent to the Eufaula area to remove the settlers by force of arms, a conflict known as the "Intruders War".[4]:4

The Creeks signed the Treaty of Washington in 1826, ceding most of their land in Georgia and eastern Alabama to the United States,[5] but it was not fully effective in practice until the late 1820s. The 1832 Treaty of Cusseta, by which the Creeks ceded all land east of the Mississippi River to the United States, allowed white settlers to legally buy land from the Creek. However, the treaty's terms did not require any natives to relocate.[6] By 1835 the land on which the town was built had been mostly purchased by white settlers, and had a store, owned in part by William Irwin, after whom the new settlement was named "Irwinton".[4]:5

Significant numbers of Jewish settlers came to Eufaula in the middle of the nineteenth century from Germany and from neighboring states. The community founded a cemetery; the first burial took place in 1845.[7]
