After all, you need to find and enroll in a college that will furnish the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet tech. But just how do you go about analyzing and contrasting programs so that you can make the proper choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their homes. Once they have identified some nearby schools, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when assessing veterinary technician schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary technician programs you are considering before you make a final selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various responsibilities of vet techs and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Veterinary Technician

Akiak AK vet technician holding dogAmong the first decisions that you will need to make is if you plan to train as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What technicians and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many tasks that they can perform within the Akiak AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Akiak AK laboratories or research facilities as well.

Online Vet Tech Schools Offered

Akiak AK student attending online vet tech programAn approach that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Akiak AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, such as for commuting and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Akiak AK vet tech schoolsAt this point you probably have decided on which veterinarian credential that you wish to obtain, and if you want to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in the Akiak AK area and across the USA, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the vet tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the vet tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for a number of Akiak AK area vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you choose must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Akiak AK vet clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with Akiak AK veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A low rate may signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the school has an outstanding reputation within the Akiak AK veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Akiak AK schools you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary technician classes from your Akiak AK home, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the veterinarian schools you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Akiak AK. Some may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of sickness, work or family emergencies. You may find that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
