After all, you need to search for and enroll in a school that will deliver the proper training so that you can succeed as a veterinary technician. But just how do you go about reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the right choice? Many future students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their residences. When they have found some area schools, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant concerns when assessing veterinary technician programs, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary technician schools you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied roles of vet techs and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Technician

Galena AK vet technician holding dogAmong the initial decisions that you will need to make is if you desire to train as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Galena AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved duties, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Galena AK labs or research facilities as well.

Online Vet Tech Programs Offered

Galena AK student attending online vet tech programAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Galena AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for instance for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary technician school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Technician Programs

Questions to ask Galena AK vet tech schoolsAt this point you should have determined which veterinary credential that you want to obtain, and if you intend to study online or attend a college on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in the Galena AK area and across the United States, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to choose a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the vet tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the veterinary technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Galena AK area veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Galena AK veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs arranged with Galena AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate may signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the program has an excellent reputation within the Galena AK vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Galena AK colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Galena AK home, you must make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the campus is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the veterinary schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Galena AK. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

    Galena, Alaska

Galena (/ɡəˈliːnə/) (Notaalee Denh in Koyukon) is a city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. At the 2010 census the population was 470, with a 2016 estimate of 488 inhabitants. Galena was established in 1918, and a military airfield was built adjacent to the city during World War II. The city was incorporated in 1971.

The Koyukon Athabascans had seasonal camps in the area and moved as the wild game migrated. In the summer many families floated on rafts to the Yukon River to fish for salmon. There were 12 summer fish camps located on the Yukon River between the Koyukuk River and the Nowitna River. Galena was established in 1918 near an Athabascan fish camp called Henry's Point. It became a supply and point for nearby lead ore mines that opened in 1918 and 1919.[5]

In 1941 and 1942, during World War II,[5] a military air field was built adjacent to the civilian airport, and the two facilities shared the runway and flight line facilities. This air field was designated Galena Air Force Station shortly after the split of the United States Air Force from the United States Army, which occurred as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. During the 1950s, the construction of additional military facilities at Galena and the nearby Campion Air Force Station, in support of Galena's mission as a forward operating base under the auspices of the 5072nd Air Base Group, headquartered at Elmendorf Air Force Base, near Anchorage, provided improvements to the airport and the local infrastructure, causing economic growth for the area.[citation needed]
