After all, you need to locate and enroll in a college that will deliver the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician. But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the correct choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their homes. After they have located some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are significant factors when comparing veterinary technician schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary technician programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the varied responsibilities of veterinary technicians and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Tech

Iliamna AK vet technician holding dogOne of the first decisions that you will have to make is whether you wish to train as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What technicians and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Iliamna AK veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and usually obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Iliamna AK laboratories or research facilities also.

Veterinary Technician Online Schools Offered

Iliamna AK student attending online vet tech programAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Iliamna AK veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for travel and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary technician school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Technician Programs

Questions to ask Iliamna AK vet tech schoolsBy now you probably have decided on which veterinarian credential that you want to attain, and if you intend to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in the Iliamna AK area as well as across the Country, you must ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other important qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the veterinary technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding review process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Iliamna AK area vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Iliamna AK vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a medical setting. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs set up with Iliamna AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate might mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the program has an exceptional reputation within the Iliamna AK veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Iliamna AK programs you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from your Iliamna AK home, you need to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the college is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the veterinary colleges you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night near Iliamna AK. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your active life.

    Iliamna, Alaska

Iliamna was originally the name of an Athabaskan village at the point where the Iliamna River flows into Iliamna Lake, about 40 miles (64 km) from present-day Iliamna. That site is now called Old Iliamna. In 1935, the residents of Old Iliamna moved to the present-day location.[2]

The first sport fishing lodge in Iliamna was built in the 1930s and the second was built in the 1950s. Many more were built in the later 1900s. Iliamna's economy has two main elements: subsistence fishing and hunting and sport fishing lodges. Year-round residents largely pursue subsistence activities while summer workers from other areas work in the lodges.

Around 1913, Herman Gartelmann, Jack Kinney, and Ed Ahola built a Roadhouse here, taking advantage of air travel through Lake Clark Pass. Jack and Ed were from Old Iliamna village. Frederick Roehl purchased the roadhouse around 1917, and when he died in 1923, Hans Seversen took over and the facility became known as Seversen's Roadhouse. He started hosting big game hunters in 1921 and the first sport fishermen in 1937. Martin Seversen ran the operation from 1946 and put up a new building. Mary Seversen Clark sold the operation in 1956.[3]
