Karluk AK vet tech checking kittensAchieving your lifelong goal of working with and caring for animals by enrolling in a veterinary technician college near Karluk AK could at first feel like an overwhelming endeavor. After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a vet tech. But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing schools so that you can make the best choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. When they have found some area schools, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when evaluating vet tech programs, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary technician programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate choice. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the different duties of vet techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Vet Tech

Karluk AK vet technician holding dogOne of the initial decisions that you will need to make is if you want to train as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous tasks that they can perform within the Karluk AK veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared to assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex duties, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Karluk AK laboratories or research facilities as well.

Vet Tech Online Schools Offered

Karluk AK student attending online vet tech programAn alternative that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Karluk AK veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician program may be the ideal option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Karluk AK vet tech schoolsBy now you should have determined which veterinary credential that you want to earn, and if you want to study online or attend a college on campus. Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in the Karluk AK area as well as across the United States, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the veterinary technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Karluk AK area vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Karluk AK vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs arranged with Karluk AK veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate may indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the program has an excellent reputation within the Karluk AK veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Karluk AK programs you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Karluk AK home, you must confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the college is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the veterinary colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Karluk AK. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your vet training into your active life.
