After all, you need to locate and enroll in a college that will deliver the necessary training so that you can succeed as a veterinary technician. But just how do you tackle reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the correct choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. After they have found some local schools, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important factors when evaluating vet technician schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the vet technician schools you are considering before you make a final decision. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the different roles of veterinary technicians and the training options offered.

The Role of a Vet Tech

King Salmon AK vet technician holding dogOne of the first decisions that you will need to make is whether you wish to train as a vet assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the King Salmon AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared with assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  King Salmon AK laboratories or research facilities as well.

Vet Tech Online Programs Offered

King Salmon AK student attending online vet tech programAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local King Salmon AK veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet tech school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask King Salmon AK vet tech schoolsBy now you should have selected which veterinary credential that you wish to earn, and if you intend to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in the King Salmon AK area and across the United States, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the vet tech schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many King Salmon AK area vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, phone some King Salmon AK vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to obtain practical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with King Salmon AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary technician school can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate could suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the program has an excellent reputation within the King Salmon AK vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the King Salmon AK schools you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary technician classes from your King Salmon AK home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the campus is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the veterinary schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night near King Salmon AK. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
