After all, you need to locate and enroll in a college that will provide the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a vet tech. But just how do you approach analyzing and contrasting programs so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their homes. After they have found some nearby schools, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant concerns when comparing vet tech programs, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary technician schools you are looking at before you make a final selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied duties of vet techs and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Tech

Minto AK vet technician holding dogAmong the initial decisions that you will need to make is whether you wish to train as a veterinary assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Minto AK veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training in contrast to assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Minto AK labs or research facilities as well.

Online Vet Tech Programs Offered

Minto AK student attending online vet tech programAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Minto AK veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Tech Schools

Questions to ask Minto AK vet tech schoolsBy now you should have decided on which veterinarian degree that you would like to attain, and if you want to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in the Minto AK area and across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the vet tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Minto AK area vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations involving your specific schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Minto AK veterinarians that you might want to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with Minto AK veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech school may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the college has an excellent reputation within the Minto AK vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Minto AK colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from your Minto AK home, you must make sure that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the school is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Minto AK. Some might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.
