Perryville AK vet tech checking kittensAchieving your long term dream of working with and helping animals by enrolling in a vet tech program near Perryville AK may at first feel like a challenging task. After all, you must search for and enroll in a program that will deliver the proper training so that you can be successful as a veterinary technician. But just how do you approach analyzing and contrasting schools so that you can make the proper choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their residences. Once they have found some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech programs, they are not the only critical ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the vet technician programs you are considering before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different duties of veterinary technicians and the training alternatives available.

The Function of a Vet Tech

Perryville AK vet technician holding dogAmong the first decisions that you will have to make is if you plan to train as a veterinary assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Perryville AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Perryville AK labs or research facilities as well.

Online Vet Tech Schools Offered

Perryville AK student attending online vet tech programAn option that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Perryville AK veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for instance for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary technician program may be the perfect option for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Perryville AK vet tech schoolsBy now you probably have decided on which veterinarian credential that you wish to earn, and if you want to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in the Perryville AK area as well as across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the vet tech programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Perryville AK area vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Perryville AK veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with Perryville AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help establish connections in the local veterinary community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary technician college may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate may signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the program has an excellent reputation within the Perryville AK veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Perryville AK programs you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Perryville AK home, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the school is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night near Perryville AK. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your active life.

    Perryville, Alaska

Perryville is located in southwestern Lake and Peninsula Borough at 55°54′49″N 159°09′04″W / 55.913632°N 159.151143°W / 55.913632; -159.151143.[3] It sits on the south shore of the Alaska Peninsula at the mouth of the Kametolook River and faces the Chiachi Islands about 2 miles (3 km) out in the Pacific Ocean.

Mount Katmai erupted on June 6, 1912, permanently displacing many local native people. One month after the eruption, 78 of the Katmai refugees boarded the U.S. revenue cutter Manning to return to the Alaska Peninsula and establish a new village. After a failed first village site selection, the natives were relocated yet again to a spot 200 miles (320 km) southwest of Mt. Katmai. The new settlement was named "Perry", and later became known as "Perryville", for K.W. Perry, captain of the Manning.[4]

Perryville first appeared on the 1920 U.S. Census as an unincorporated village (also listed under the alternative name of Chignik Post Office). It reported in every successive census except for 1950, when it did not appear. It was made a census-designated place (CDP) in 1980.
