After all, you have to locate and enroll in a program that will deliver the necessary training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician. But just how do you approach analyzing and comparing schools so that you can make the correct selection? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their homes. Once they have identified some local schools, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are significant considerations when assessing vet technician programs, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the vet technician schools you are reviewing before you make an ultimate decision. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different roles of veterinary technicians and the training options offered.

The Job of a Vet Tech

Port Alexander AK vet technician holding dogOne of the initial decisions that you will need to make is whether you plan to train as a vet assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many functions that they can perform within the Port Alexander AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and basically perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Port Alexander AK laboratories or research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Technician Schools Offered

Port Alexander AK student attending online vet tech programAn approach that might be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Port Alexander AK veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, such as for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet tech program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Port Alexander AK vet tech schoolsBy now you should have selected which veterinary credential that you wish to earn, and if you intend to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in the Port Alexander AK area and across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the vet tech programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the vet tech college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Port Alexander AK area veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Port Alexander AK veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with Port Alexander AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local veterinary community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary technician program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate might mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the college has an exceptional reputation within the Port Alexander AK veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Port Alexander AK colleges you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Port Alexander AK home, you must make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the school is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the veterinary colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night near Port Alexander AK. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your active life.
