Saint Marys AK vet tech checking kittensRealizing your lifelong aspiration of working with and helping animals by enrolling in a vet tech college near Saint Marys AK could at first seem like an overwhelming undertaking. After all, you must find and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet tech. But just how do you tackle evaluating and contrasting colleges so that you can make the proper choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their homes. After they have located some local colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important concerns when evaluating vet technician schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary technician programs you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the various responsibilities of vet techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Vet Tech

Saint Marys AK vet technician holding dogOne of the first decisions that you will have to make is whether you plan to train as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous tasks that they can carry out within the Saint Marys AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared with assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complex functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Saint Marys AK laboratories or research facilities as well.

Veterinary Technician Online Schools Offered

Saint Marys AK student attending online vet tech programAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Saint Marys AK veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Technician Programs

Questions to ask Saint Marys AK vet tech schoolsAt this point you probably have determined which veterinarian credential that you wish to obtain, and if you want to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in the Saint Marys AK area and across the Country, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the veterinary technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a requirement for employment for many Saint Marys AK area veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final tip, call some Saint Marys AK veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs set up with Saint Marys AK veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish relationships in the local vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary technician program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate may indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the school has an excellent reputation within the Saint Marys AK veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Saint Marys AK colleges you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously covered location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Saint Marys AK home, you must make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the school is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Saint Marys AK. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family issues. You might find that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.
