Wauchula FL vet tech checking kittensRealizing your lifelong dream of working with and caring for animals by enrolling in a vet tech college near Wauchula FL may at first feel like a daunting task. After all, you must locate and enroll in a school that will deliver the necessary training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet tech. But just how do you approach analyzing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the best choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are near their homes. After they have located some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important factors when evaluating vet technician schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the vet technician programs you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the different roles of veterinary technicians and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Technician

Wauchula FL vet technician holding dogOne of the initial decisions that you will need to make is whether you desire to train as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What technicians and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many duties that they can perform within the Wauchula FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more involved functions, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Wauchula FL labs or research facilities as well.

Online Vet Tech Schools Offered

Wauchula FL student attending online vet tech programAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Wauchula FL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary technician school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Technician Programs

Questions to ask Wauchula FL vet tech schoolsAt this point you should have selected which veterinarian credential that you want to earn, and if you want to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in the Wauchula FL area as well as across the United States, you should ask some relevant questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the veterinary technician programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet tech college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Wauchula FL area veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Wauchula FL veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with Wauchula FL veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary technician college may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may signify that the school has an exceptional reputation within the Wauchula FL veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Wauchula FL schools you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from your Wauchula FL home, you must make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the vet schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Wauchula FL. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family issues. You may find that an online program is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
