After all, you need to search for and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet tech. But just how do you approach evaluating and contrasting programs so that you can make the best choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their residences. Once they have found some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are important considerations when assessing veterinary technician programs, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the vet technician schools you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various roles of veterinary technicians and the training options offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Technician

Spivey KS vet technician holding dogAmong the initial decisions that you will have to make is if you want to train as a veterinary assistant, technologist or technician. Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of tasks that they can perform within the Spivey KS veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved functions, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Spivey KS labs or research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Technician Schools Offered

Spivey KS student attending online vet tech programAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Spivey KS veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary technician school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Technician Programs

Questions to ask Spivey KS vet tech schoolsAt this point you should have determined which veterinarian degree that you want to obtain, and if you prefer to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in the Spivey KS area and across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the vet tech colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Spivey KS area veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Kansas school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Spivey KS veterinarians that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with Spivey KS veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A low rate might signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the college has an excellent reputation within the Spivey KS vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Spivey KS schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from your Spivey KS home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the vet schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night near Spivey KS. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of sickness, work or family responsibilities. You might find that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your active life.
